Case study — Dairy

Milk powder handling,
intake to bulk-bag

A full storage-to-packaging line for a dairy processor — silo intake, dense-phase transfer and bulk-bag filling under one contract.

In brief

For a New Zealand dairy processor, TLG delivered a complete post-dryer powder line under one contract: silo storage with mass-flow discharge, dense-phase pneumatic transfer to protect the agglomerated powder, check-sieving, and bulk bag filling at declared weight — designed, fabricated and commissioned by one engineering team.

The project

The brief

Move whole and skim milk powder from dryer discharge to despatch without degrading the product the dryer had made — and do it inside a dust-zoned, dairy-hygiene plant with full batch traceability.

The processor had lived with a line of mixed parentage: conveying from one supplier, packing from another, and every interface a negotiation. The requirement this time was one contract, one team, one commissioning.

The project

What TLG built

Storage came first: stainless silos with cone geometry engineered from the powder's measured flow properties, filled by convey line through top-mounted filtration. Transfer to packing ran dense phase — low-velocity slugs that leave agglomerates and bulk density intact where a dilute system would have milled them.

Ahead of the filling head, product passed a check-sieve sized to the plant's HACCP foreign-body controls. Bulk bag filling closed the line: four-loop suspension, inflatable spout seal, densification during fill, and load-cell weighing to declared weight.

The project

Why it worked

Every interface that usually causes trouble — silo discharge into the convey pot, line termination above the filler — was designed once, by the engineers responsible for both sides of it. Commissioning proved the line as a whole, and the batch records the controls produce satisfied the processor's export audit regime from day one.
